Nam Nam Noodle Bar (Raffles City Shopping Centre)
Nam Nam Noodle Bar (Nam Nam) which specialises in serving Vietnamese cuisine belongs to the Les Amis Group (which includes the likes of Au Jardin, Bistro Du Vin, Canele and other restaurants). But unlike these upscale restaurants, Nam Nam offers more affordable food in a causal bistro setting targeting the mass market.
Nam Nam Noodle Bar (Raffles City Shopping Centre) |
Nam Nam first opened at Raffles City Shopping Centre in late 2012. Within a short time span of less than a year, two other outlets have opened at Wheelock Place and Suntec City.
I have frequently past by its outlet at Raffles City and wanted to try it on several occasions. However, there was always a long perceptual queue! This time, we decided to meet visit the eatery early at 1130am to beat the crowd.

Banh Min counter |
The Banh Min (Vietnamese bread, normally toasted baguettes) counter is located right in front of the eatery.
Nam Nam's seven commandments - the Namnam-tiquette placed at the front of the eatery.
On every table, there was a row of bottles of condiments. Personally, we did use any of them as the originally taste of the dishes were sufficient.
Southern Roll with Sweet Shrimps, Egg, Herbs $4.90 |
We kick started the meal with the Southern Roll with Sweet Shrimps, Egg, Herbs $4.90 was served with hoisin sauce fried with chicken liver dip. The Southern Roll were bland on its own. You would need to dip it into the sauce provided which was the game changer. The combination of the dip enhanced the flavour and would ignite your taste buds. One 'glitch' was that the rice paper used to wrap the roll was too tough. They really need to improve on this aspect as we had a hard time biting into it.
Ordered an Extra Topping: Wagyu Beef $2.50. It arrived in a small bowl. The stock was similar just that it was more robust - full beefy essence! The Wagyu Beef was also thinly sliced and was pinkish as it was slightly undercooked. This would be a good choice if you are a beef fanatic.
Pho Beef Steak Slices $8.90 |
The most famous Vietnamese dish is Pho which is essentially a bowl of rice noodles with herbs, spices and thinly sliced meat (normally beef or chicken) in beef stock. How could we not order Pho in a Vietnamese eatery!
Pho Beef Steak Slices $8.90 |
The Pho Beef Steak Slices $8.90 was surprisingly good. The two main factor was the beef slices and the beef stock. The beef slices were thinly sliced, slightly uncooked, and hence were so soft and tender. The beef stock was light, rich, aromatic (due to the herbs) and the flavours were so well balanced. Together with the thin and smooth rice noodles, it was a hearty comforting bowl of Pho! Yummylicious!~
Extra Toppings: Wagyu Beef $2.50 |
Pho Beef Balls $8.90 |
The Pho Beef Balls $8.90 was average. Two main reasons. The beef balls were not as shiok as the beef slices in terms of flavour. In addition, the stock was not as beefy compared to the bowl of Pho Beef Steak Slices.
We quite like our dining experience at Nam Nam Noodle Bar and would definitely be back for the Pho Beef Steak Slices! With more outlets, hopefully the queue will not be as long.

Strangers' Reunion at Kampong Bahru Road (Outram)
Strangers' Reunion is a cafe located at Kampong Bahru Road, opposite Singapore General Hospital. There has been alot of hype about this cafe online as it was opened by Singapore National Barista Championship winner Ryan Tan.
When we arrived at around 1145 am on a weekday, the brightly lite cafe was already filled to the brim. We had to share a table with another group - strangers (the name of the cafe =P). The cafe was not what I imagined it to be; cozy, quiet.
Instead, it was crowded, noisy and squeezy especially if you are seated at the row of table with sofa and cushion (right part of above photo). Those who were seated there had to move their tables to allow their friends to access the sofa area and also for their friends to leave.
The menu.
My partner ordered a Cafe Mocha $5.50 while I ordered a Cappuccino $4.90. Both beverages were disappointing. The Cappuccino (which i ordered) was too milky and the distinct richness and taste of espresso was missing.
The Truffles Fries $12.90 came with grated truffle, truffled aioli and parmesan. It was a pity consistency was lacking (some fries were hard while some were soggy), if not this would have been a great side dish.
Since we had heard so much about the buttermilk waffles, we had to order one to try for ourselves. We ordered the Buttermilk Waffles with Artisan Greek Yogurt & Fresh Fruits $12.90. So beautiful and enticing in appearance! However, the thick, fluffy waffle did not match up to our expectations as it lacked flavour and fragrance.

Needless to say, I was not impressed with the food and drinks we had at Strangers' Reunion. I do not understand the hype. As we left, we noticed that there was a long queue outside, waiting for their turn fora table in the cafe (on a weekday)!! There must be something worth going back for, I wonder what was it. Well, everyone has differing taste; as the saying goes one man's poison is another man's meat.

Chai Chee Pork Porridge 菜市猪肉粥 (85 Fengshan Food Centre)
At 85 Fengshan Food Centre at Blk 85 Bedok North, there are so many stalls that you would likely to to ponder over what to order. This was what happened to us when we travelled to Bedok for Supper. We have heard that the Porridge was quite good, but were wondering if we should waste our calories on porridge for supper. Anyway who eats porridge for supper?! Well, I have to eat my words.. in the end, we ordered 1 bowl of porridge to share.
Chai Chee Pork Porridge 菜市猪肉粥 is apparently quite a famous and popular porridge stall in the food centre. When we were there, there was a short queue, after ordering, we had to wait for around 10 minutes before our order was served to our table. They serve a variety of porridge, ranging from pork, century egg, fish to chicken porridge.
Pork Porridge (猪肉粥) with Egg $3.50 |
This Pork Porridge (猪肉粥) cost $3. We added an egg for $0.50. The raw egg was placed at the bottom of the bowl before pipping hot porridge was poured over it. The porridge was served with minced pork and lean pork meat, and topped with you tiao and spring onions.

Pork Porridge (猪肉粥) with Egg $3.50 |
The porridge was surprisingly good. The texture of the porridge was thick and smooth. It was not grainy or watery. Moreover, kudos to the stall owners it was not salty! The decision to add an egg was the icing on the cake as it made the porridge creamier. Wonderful, comforting bowl of porridge. It was simple yet delicious! Though I wish that they were more generous with the pork meat.

Bak Kut Teh • Ipoh Hor Fun (Albert Centre Market & Food Centre)
Bak Kut Teh • Ipoh Hor Fun is a hawker stall located at Albert Centre Market & Food Centre. This food centre located a stone throw away from Bugis MRT station is just behind Bugis Village. This stall is unique as it offers both Bak Kut Teh and Ipoh Hor Fun.
The Bak Kut Teh Menu.
Ipoh Hor Fun Menu. They offer a few variety of hor fun.
This stall is operated by two person. The gentleman at the foreground is the owner while the lady is the helper. The lady has since left and the owner had to operate as a one man show for a number of weeks.
I was glad that during a recent visit, I found out that the owner had managed to hire another helper to help him. Heard from him that it was tough looking for a helper who was willing to work at the food centre as it was hot, stuffy and long hours.
Shredded Chicken Hor Fun $4 |
As usual I was a greedy glutton and upsized the Hor Fun to $4.
Shredded Chicken Hor Fun $4 |
The Shredded Chicken Hor Fun $4 was served with many pieces of shredded chicken meat, vegetables, slices of mushrooms and a lots of hor fun. I liked the mushrooms which absorbed the hor fun sauce and was so juicy. The other ingredients were normal. What stood out was the dark Hor Fun gravy which was well executed. The gravy was pleasantly flavourful with the right amount of starch. In addition, there were wolfberries aka Goji in the gravy which gave it a slightly sweet taste.
The gravy complemented the ingredients well making the whole dish so pleasant and delicious.

Fried Wanton Hor Fun $4 |
Char Siew Wanton Hor Fun $4 |
Both the Fried Wanton Hor Fun $4 and Char Siew Wanton Hor Fun $4 were not bad too. The gravy played an important role.
I have always been back and tried their different variations of Ipoh Hor Fun and have not tried their Bak Kut Teh before. If you have tried it, do let me know how it fared.
Overall, this stall; Bak Kut Teh • Ipoh Hor Fun serves a decent plate of Hor Fun accompanied by generous serving of ingredients. It may not be the best but, for the price it was certainly value for money.

Hua Mui Coffee Shop 华美茶餐室 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)
Hua Mui Coffee Shop 华美茶餐室 is a popular two storey Hainanese coffee shop (aka Kopitiam) located near the causeway. To be exact, it is a 15 minutes walk away from City Square! This coffee shop has been operating since 1946, serving both both Chinese and Western cuisine (do note they have been certified halal). I first read about this place through Johor Kaki Blog and had shortlisted this as a place to try one day. That one day came 2 years later!
When we arrived on a weekday morning, the ground level of the restaurant was full. We headed up to the 2nd level. Do be careful, as the steps are quite steep at the upper half.
The 2nd level had more seating capacity compared to the first. It was well ventilated. It was a pleasant surprised when I found out that my mobile phone was able to detect Singapore's M1 service at the 2nd level! =)

This coffee shop still uses the traditional way of delivering food to the 2nd level.
To keep the authenticity of the outlet, they have retained the traditional pulley system! As you can see in the above photo, the food for customers at the 2nd level are placed on the tray linked to the pulley system. Then one of the staff at the 2nd level would use the pull system to pull up the tray of food.
The Hainanese Chicken Chop is a must try at Hua Mui Coffee Shop! If I come again, I will also want to try the Singapore Style Bee Hoon. If you have tried it before, do let me know!

Bornga Korean BBQ Restaurant 본가 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)
Bornga is a leading Korean Barbecue (BBQ) restaurant chain with outlets in Korea, USA, Malaysia and Singapore. The restaurant chain is started by Korean Celebrity Chef Jong Won Paik.
We visited this restaurant on a weekday. I have not tried Bornga in Singapore. But since we were in City Square (Johor Bahru), we decided to give this a try!
The interior of the restaurant. Above each table, there was an extendable exhaust pipe mounted on the ceiling that could be pulled down to the table if BBQ meat was ordered.

Yan Kee Noodle House at BK Eating House
I have heard about a noodle stall in a coffeeshop at Circular road which specialises in Dry Mee Sua. This is unique to me as Fishball Noodles and Bak Chor Mee (mee pok or mee kia) nearly always take the limelight in any noodle stall, not mee sua.
The stall is called Yan Kee Noodle House at BK Eating House located at the junction of South Bridge Road and Circular Road. Another factor which makes it so unique is that the stall is open 24 hours and is only closed on Sundays.
When I visited on a weekday noon, the eating house was surprisingly empty. There were only a handful customers. There was also no queue at Yan Kee Noodle House.
Needless to say, I ordered their Speciality Dry Mee Sua, made payment and waited for the food to be served to my table.
The Speciality Dry Mee Sua cost $3.50.
The Speciality Dry Mee Sua was served with fishballs, meatballs, minced meat, lean meat, a whole mushroom, ikan bilis and pork lard. What stood out was that the mee sua which was amazingly springy, not soggy. In addition, each strand of mee sua when well mixed was well coated with the chilli and vingear sauce which is bounded to entice your taste buds. The two handmade fishballs, bigger than what you get else where also deserved a mention. They were bouncy and firm with no fishy taste. The smaller things to note which made this such a wonderful dish was the crunchy ikan bilis and pork lard which gave an additional dimension to the texture and oomph of the dish.
For just $3.50, they were so generous with the ingredients. Value for money and yummy!
