Creamier Ice Cream and Coffee (Toa Payoh Lorong 1)

$

Creamier Ice Cream and Coffee (Toa Payoh Lorong 1) is a cafe hidden in a corner of one of the oldest HDB estate in Singapore (i.e. Toa Payoh HDB estate)! Homemade (handcrafted) ice cream, coffee and waffles are sold in this cafe. This cafe is located in between Braddell, Toa Payoh and Caldecott MRT stations. The nearest MRT station is Braddell and it is around a 10 minutes walk away from the station.
We (a group of three) visited Creamier Ice Cream and Coffee on a weekday (Friday) at around 215pm. Although I was aware that this cafe was popular and that it was small, I did not expect it to be full house even on a weekday!
Interesting lights
We tried waiting for a table, but after 15 minutes of wait, we only managed to get a counter table. Well, what to do.... I can't imagine what the crowd would be like on a weekend.

After securing our seats, we proceeded and place our order.
After making payment, we were given this paper cup with the number "09" on it. Any guess what it is?
The answer was hidden in the cup. It was the key to our orders. A waiting number!
Belgian waffle with Earl Grey Lavendar and Orange Cranberry Vodka Ice Cream $11.80
After around 10 minutes, we received our food! Needless to say we ordered their signature Belgian waffle with ice cream! From observation, this was the most popular order, every table had at least one of this!
Belgian waffle with Earl Grey Lavendar and Orange Cranberry Vodka Ice Cream $11.80
We ordered our Belgian Waffle with Earl Grey Lavendar and Orange Cranberry Vodka Ice Cream $11.80. They had a wide variety of ice cream such Sea Salt Gula Melaka, Roasted Pistachio, Banana Chocolate Chip Crumbles and Banana Roasted Pecan. We sampled several of them before settling for the two ice creams.

The Earl Grey Lavendar ice cream which had a unique lavendar after taste, was fragrant and creamy. The Orange Cranberry Vodka ice cream was a premium ice cream. The combination of orange and cranberry was a perfect match as both flavours complemented each other well and did not overwhelm each other.

For information on the cost/prices: A waffle with ice cream cost $8.50. Extra scoop of ice cream cost $2.50 each. As the Orange Cranberry Vodka was a premium ice cream, there was an extra cost of $0.80 per scoop.
Belgian waffle with Earl Grey Lavendar and Orange Cranberry Vodka Ice Cream $11.80
The freshly made Belgian Waffles were well executed! They were incredibly crispy on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. The slightly hard (outside), soft (inside) texture, warmth of the waffle couple with the cold ice cream were such a perfect combination.  The addition of the maple syrup and chocolate sauce well very well with this too!

After trying this, I understand the raves about the dessert served here. The Belgian Waffles with Ice Cream is a must try! But I will not advise coming on a weekend unless you are prepared to wait and squeeze with the crowd.

Nana's Green Tea (Plaza Singapura)

Nana's Green Tea first started off as the Japanese version of Starbucks in Jiyugaoka, Japan. It all began when the owner (a Japanese man) was worried that the culture of drinking tea would be overtaken by coffee. Hence, he started Nana's Green Tea and concentrated on Japanese green tea and Japanese Food. Nana's Green Tea has many outlets in Japan. Besides Japan, they have also expanded to China, Hong Kong and even Singapore.
Nana's Green Tea opened its first outlet in Singapore at Plaza Singapura (directly above Dhoby Ghaut MRTStation).
The design of the restaurant was unique. Each table was be 'surrounded' by either wooden or metal mesh rectangle frames providing customers with their own private yet cozy dining area.
Week Day Set Lunch
Nana's Green Tea current has a Week Day Set Lunch promotion from 11am to 230pm on weekdays. With the promotion, customers can order any main course and a beverage below $8.00 for only $13.90! In my opinion, this lunch promotion is a real steal considering the prices of the main courses and beverages. Hence, I have went back more on more than four occasions during weekday lunch.

The photos below are a summary of what I ate over several occasions. For reference, I will show the ala carte prices.
Matcha Soft Cream Latte (cold) $8
Judging from the name (i.e. Nana's Green Tea), I knew that I had to try their Green Tea (Matcha). I ordered the Matcha Soft Cream Latte (cold) $8 which was topped with soft serve vanilla ice cream. It was initially very bitter at first. The magic starts when the ice cream melted resulting in a perfect harmony with the green tea. More creamy, sweeter and yet retained the distinctive green tea fragrance and bitterness.
Thin Matcha Green Tea Float (cold) $8
The Thin Matcha Green Tea Float (cold) $8 was topped with green tea ice cream was served without milk and sugar. Instead, sugar syrup was given. Personally, I preferred the Matcha Soft Cream Latte.
Hoji Kuromitsu Latte (cold) $8
Hoji Kuromitsu Latte $8 could be served hot or cold. I ordered the cold version. This drink is a type of Japanese green tea. The difference is that it is roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal resulting in its colour and a caramelised taste. As I had not tried this before, I decided to try this. I did not like the taste of it. I will stick to the green tea instead.
Azuki Latte (hot) $7
Azuki Latte $7 could be served hot or cold. The Azuki (red beans) was boiled with sugar and then blended with milk. Despite its dull appearance, it was quite addictive. The hot one was a tad too sweet. I preferred the cold version better as the ice helped lessen the sweetness level.
Unagi Mabushi Don $16.80
The Unagi Mabushi Don $16.80 consisting of grilled soy marinated eel served with Japanese rice and topped with sesame, nori (seaweed) and spring onion was the most expensive main course. It was served with a bowl of miso soup. Their miso soup was quite good!
Unagi Mabushi Don $16.80
Unagi Mabushi Don was easily one of the best main course in Nana's Green Tea. The grilled eel was so delectable and soft that it provided a melt in the mouth sensation. With the juices from the soy marinated eel drizzled over the rice along with the toppings, the rice was so savoury and addictive.
Salmon and Maguro Don $15.80
The Salmon and Maguro Don $15.80 was also served with a bowl of miso soup and special sesame oil. It comprised of soy marinated tuna and salmon served over Japanese rice topped with sesame, nori, pickled ginger, spring onion, daikon sprout and mayonnaise sauce.
Salmon and Maguro Don $15.80
Drizzle the special sesame oil over this dish to enhance the taste further. Although there was a generous serving of salmon and maguro (tuna), it was a pity that they were not fresh.
Sukiyaki Udon $14.80
Sukiyaki Udon $14.80 was served with sliced beef, toufu, mushroom, leek, poached egg and udon. The poached egg was decently executed and the egg yolk was still runny. Overall, it was a decent bowl of udon, but more ingredients could have been given.
Sukiyaki Don $14.80
Sukiyaki Don $14.80 was similar to the Sukiyaki Udon, instead of Udon, it was served with Don (rice).
Sukiyaki Don $14.80
We preferred the Sukiyaki Udon as the beef slices in the Sukiyaki Don was harder and saltier.
Gyu Shabu Goma Dare Udon $15.80
The Gyu Shabu Goma Dare Udon $15.80 was beautifully presented. It consisted of beef slices, tomato, corn, cucumber, lettuce, spring onion, daikon sprout with cold udon. The difference ingredients provided different textures (crunchy, hard, soft) and flavours to this dish. It was exciting going through this dish at the initial stage. However, towards the end, I got jelak (tired) of eating this dish.
Locomoko Don $15.80
Locomoko Don $15.80 comprised of beef patty, tomato, broccoli, lettuce, poached egg and Japanese rice. The tomato sauce which was added over the beef patty was just too spicy for our liking. It overwhelmed the other flavours. What a pity.

Although there was hits and misses, the Week Day Set Lunch promotion made it so much more affordable having a meal at Nana's Green Tea!

Yi Ji Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles 福建炒虾面 (Upper Serangoon Road)

Yi Ji Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles 福建炒虾面 is located at Mee Sek Food Court along Upper Serangoon Road (5 minutes from Kovan MRT station). This stall is located in the same place as the famous Punggol Nasi Lemak.
I visited on a weekday evening. Although it was self service, I waited for not more than 10 minutes before my order was ready.

The Fried Hokkien Mee was available in $4, $5 and $6. If you require additional chilli, it would cost at an additional $0.50.
Fried Hokkien Mee $5
Fried Hokkien Mee $5
Yi Ji 's Fried Hokkien Mee $5 used thin bee hoon (instead of thick bee hoon) and yellow noodles. There were 3 pieces of prawns, a few pieces of squids and lean meat. Their version was also slightly drier with little broth underneath  the noodles.
Fried Hokkien Mee $5
Although the Fried Hokkien Mee had great texture and was flavourful, it seems to lacked wok hei and the unique flavourful attained when fried with pork lard. There was no pork lard found in my plate of Hokkien Mee. The prawns were firm and fresh.

The sambal chilli added at the side was super spicy as proclaimed on its signboard. Although it was very spicy, it lacked fragrant. I ate tried the chilli a few times before stopping as it oerwhemled the other flaours.

Overall, it was quite a decent plate of Hokkien Mee.

Lam's Abalone Noodle Restaurant 阿南鲍鱼面 (Marina Square)

Lam's Abalone Noodle Restaurant 阿南鲍鱼面 was established by a person known as Ah Lam. He first started out in the early 1950s selling "Mini Wok Noodle" before being one of the first to sell abalone noodle in a coffee shop. Today, the Lam's Abalone Noodle Restaurant which he found has 3 outlets (addresses are appended at the end of this post).
We visited the outlets in Marina Square which is located at level 4; the same level as the The Gallerie (Food Court), Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice, Hotpot Culture and The Corner Place (Korean BBQ). The crowd on a weekend evening.
Lam's Abalone Noodle Restaurant has its own seating capacity which was largely under-utilised during my visit on a weekend evening. One of the reason could be because most people would bring their food to the food court to join their friends or families.
Menu
Menu

The menu which ranges from noodles (e.g. abalone noodles, mini wok noodles, etc) to Salted Baked Chicken rice, dumplings soup to smoked duck!
Signature Specialty Noodle $5.20
I ordered their Signature Specialty Noodle $5.20 which came with fish ball, sliced meat, minced meat, vegetables, seaweed, a prawn, half an egg, fish skin and crunchy pork lard. It was so full of ingredients that you would not be able to see the noodles (mee pok) underneath! It is similar to Bak Chor Mee (Minced meat noodles)
Signature Specialty Noodle $5.20
I was impressed with this bowl of Signature Specialty Noodle. The mee pok mixed with the pork lard and special sauce was just so fragrant and flavourful! The sauce made a huge difference. It had such a unique and delectable flavour that the more I ate it, the more I love it. The downside was that the prawn was not fresh. Nevertheless, I quite like this bowl of noodles!
Teochew Dumplings Soup $3.50
The Signature Specialty Noodle was so good that it ignite my taste buds. I was still hungry (after wolfing down the noodles) and longed for more. Hence, I made my way back to the counter and ordered a bowl of Teochew Dumplings Soup $3.50 with high expectations.
Teochew Dumplings Soup $3.50
It was a big mistake. Ouch. We both agreed that the Teochew Dumplings were badly executed. It was tasteless and the skin was just too thick.

Original Sin (Holland Village)

Original Sin is a Mediterranean Vegetarian restaurant located at Chip Bee Gardens less than 2 minutes walk from Holland Village MRT (exit A) station. The restaurant offers both alfresco and indoor (air-conditioned) dining. As we made reservations, we decided to sit indoors as the weather was scorching hot these days. In addition, we did not want to feed the mosquitoes.

We visited during lunch time on a Saturday. During lunch hours, they had Set Lunch available during lunch hours. The set lunch consist of a Starter (choice of Soup of the Day/Green Salad), Mains and Dessert at $26. All of us ordered the set lunch.
Minestrone Soup (Soup of the Day)
Most of us including myself ordered chose the Soup of the Day as our Starter. The Soup of the Day was Minestrone Soup. The soup was full of ingredients such as carrot, cabbage, tomato, spaghetti, etc. The soup itself was not well balanced in taste, I felt that it was a tad too sour and something seems to be lacking.
Green Salad
A friend of mine ordered the Green Salad.
Spaghetti
For mains, I ordered Spaghetti which was cooked with zucchini, olive, cherry tomato, tossed in tomato basil sauce and parmesan cheese. The chef executed this dish quite well. What was lacking was that they could have been more generous with some of the ingredients such as zucchini.
Tofu Burger
My friend ordered the Tofu Burger which was served with wedges and salad greens. This was a hit among us; in a league of its own.
Tofu Burger
The Tofu Burger consisting of tofu and lentil pattie was surprisingly tasty. Although the patty was soft and crumbled easily, we love it! The potato wedges which came with potato skin was also nicely done. In addition, the entire dish was not soggy.
Mediterranean Wrap
The Mediterranean Wrap which was essentially tortilla wrap filled with chickpea and pumpkin spread, grilled eggplant, feta and salad was a dish which most of us did not appreciate. The main reason was because we were not a fan of chickpea which had a unique taste and smell.
Warm Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream
For desserts, we had Warm Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream. The chocolate cake was a tad too dry. The molten dark chocolate that flowed out from the centre of the cake was rich and dense. It was so good that it made the chocolate cake seems inferior.

The set lunch made the meal more affordable compared to the ala carte menu. However, one should still note that even with the set lunch, at $26++, this is not exactly cheap. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable meal.

Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun 港式猪肠粉 (Upper Serangoon Road)

Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun 港式猪肠粉 is located at Mee Sek Food Court along Upper Serangoon Road (5 minutes from Kovan MRT station). This stall is located in the same place as the famous Punggol Nasi Lemak. I was actually having dinner eating my Fried Hokkien Mee from Yi Ji Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles 福建炒虾面 when I noticed this stall.
What caught my eye was that each piece of Chee Chong Fun was freshly made upon order, the traditional way (using a cloth)! Not factory made! In addition, other than having having Char Siew or Prawns fillings, they had unique fillings such as Mushrooms or Chicken. Apparently, the stall has been operating for more than 30 years.
Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun $2.50
Hence, after gorging 1 plate of Fried Hokkien Mee, I ordered a plate of Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun $2.50.
Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun $2.50
The Chee Cheong Fun with mushroom fillings.
Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun $2.50
Soy sauce and sesame seeds were added over the Chee Cheong Fun. From the taste of it, I believe that a little sesame oil was added with the soy sauce resulting the extra flavour in the sauce. The rice rolls were thin and the slices of mushroom were fragrant. The chilli at the side was terrible. Dry, not fragrant and a little spicy, it was not my 'cup of tea'. Overall, it was quite a decent plate of Chee Cheong Fun, but its not the best.

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar (Wisma Atria)

$

Koh Grill & Sushi Bar located at level 4 of Wisma Atria Shopping Centre, next to Food Republic Food Court probably needs no introduction. It's Shiok!!! Maki has been highly raved about on the social media. This sushi bar can get very crowded during peak periods and it is advisable to make reservations during these periods.
I have heard so much about Koh Grill & Sushi Bar for quite a few years but had not have the chance to visit although it is centrally located; near ION Orchard. After much procrastination, we made reservations and proceed to visit during lunch on a weekday. I was surprised that there was no queue.
Pitan Tofu $4
The Pitan (Century Egg) Tofu $4; chilled tofu served with homemade paste was unique.
Pitan Tofu $4
The paste had a very strong unique century egg flavour. It provided a strong taste to the bland tofu. In addition, the tobiko (roe) provided a distinct crunchy texture of the soft tofu. I quite like the taste of this dish. Do note if you are not a fan of century egg, you are likely to dislike this dish as the flavour of the century egg is overwhelming.
Aspara Buta Maki $3
The Aspara Buta Maki $3 was essentially charcoal grilled Asparagus Pork Belly Roll.
Aspara Buta Maki $3
Although it was slightly charrred on the other side, I liked the fact that the asparagus retained its crunchiness providing a different texture. In addition, it had a smoky flavour.
Shiok!!! Maki $16.80
We ordered the highly raved about signature Shiok!!! Maki $16.80 sushi. Its photo appears in nearly 80% of all photos in Instagram and Facebook tagged with the name of this restaurant. Priced at $16.80, the Shiok!!! Maki was not cheap. It comprised of a combination of charcoal grilled eel, avocado, sushi rice wrapped with lightly roasted salmon and topped with cheesy mayonnaise and generous serving of tobiko (roe).
Shiok!!! Maki $16.80
After trying a piece of Shiok!!! Maki, I was won over. The combination of taste and texture was heavenly. It was hard to stop at one. Now I know why this had been widely raved about. Its never too late!
Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16
The Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16 consisted of a mixture of assorted vegetables, tofu, beef and ramen in broth.
Sukiyaki Beef with Ramen $16
This was easily the worst dish. Nothing fantastic and it did not appeal to us. The other 3 dishes were just too outstanding. It did not help that the homemade broth was on the salty end.

Overall, the food was decent. I liked three out of the four dishes ordered. Mainly, because we did our research before coming (it was not hard, there are so many reviews on this place). We will be back for more!

I have not been to Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre before but have heard about He Zhong Carrot Cake 合眾菜頭粿. Since we were nearby, we decided to make a slight detour and give it a try.
Carrot Cake $2
We visited the hawker centre on a weekend afternoon at around 230pm. Although the hawker centre was half full and it was non peak hours, we had to wait a good 10 minutes before we were serve we received our carrot cake. I wonder how long would the waiting time be if it was peak period.
Carrot Cake $2
The white Carrot Cake $2 was delicious. It was very well fried. Some parts were crispy and firm while the others were soft. It had the right amount of eggy flavour, flour, radish and chye poh. In addition, there was a hint of smokey fragrance.
